BTB: Girl Power
Last night was a very special treat. Not only did we get to play with our friends in Rocket Miner from Chicago, IL, there were also female musicians in ALL but one band on the bill!
I get really excited whenever I see other women in bands doing their thing and holding their own. Unfortunately, my experience in trying to reach out to my fellow lady musicians has not always been the most positive. Most of them have been standoffish, shy, or just plain passive aggressive. I try not to take it personally but, dang it, I want community!
It’s hard enough being a female musician and/or singer in a band.
NO, we are not:
-The merch girl
-The groupie
-Here for you to ogle…and in the words of Good Clean Fun, “Get it through your head: I’m not here for you to [screw] me!”
Last night was an exception to all of my previous frustrations…I made friends with my fellow woman! There was just a general good-feeling that was exchanged amongst us. No competition or insecurities, no passive aggression or indifference. It was all about our appreciation for one another and our different talents.
I would love to see more community like this. We go though so many of the same frustrations and difficulties as musicians - there’s no reason to ignore each other. We’re all in this together! And now I am even more excited to see more women involved in music.
